Angelo Asaro is an Italian contemporary artist based in London. His practice emerges from the encounter between rationality and imagination, combining figurative realism, symbolism, and rigorous compositional structure to investigate the psychological, philosophical, and existential dimensions of human experience.
NOETIC SURREALISM
Asaro defines his visual language as Noetic Surrealism, an approach in which surrealism does not arise from dreams or the automatism of the unconscious, but from consciousness and thought. His images begin with a recognisable reality, constructed with almost architectural precision, within which he introduces impossible elements, dissonances, and symbolic relationships that progressively alter their meaning.
The painting is therefore not conceived simply as a representation of the world, but as a reality designed by thought: a space in which what appears familiar enters into tension with what cannot be explained. Symbols, figures, and formal relationships thus become tools through which to explore the psychological and existential complexity of human experience.
BIOGRAPHY
With a Master’s degree in Engineering, Asaro began his professional career as a Product Manager, developing an approach grounded in analysis, structure, and design. This background contributed to shaping a painting practice characterised by precision, compositional rigour, and the deliberate construction of the image. In his work, this structure enters into dialogue with intuition and ambiguity, giving rise to compositions in which every element forms part of a broader visual and conceptual system. This dialogue between rationality and imagination is one of the defining characteristics of his artistic practice.
His painting explores themes such as identity, time, memory, contemporary alienation, the fragility of existence, and the relationship between the individual and society. Through the tension between order and dissonance, and through realistic settings permeated by symbolic elements, Asaro transforms visible reality into a space for reflecting on the complexity of human experience. His works do not seek to provide definitive answers, but rather to construct visual situations capable of questioning the way we perceive ourselves and the reality that surrounds us.
His artistic research draws inspiration from literature, philosophy, psychology, and art history. Growing up in Sicily, a land characterised by profound cultural and historical stratification, contributed to developing his sensitivity towards themes such as memory, perception, belonging, and inner conflict. The work of writers such as Luigi Pirandello has also informed his reflections on identity and the shifting relationship between reality and appearance.
His move to London introduced a further dimension to his artistic journey. Immersed in the city’s cosmopolitan and culturally dynamic environment, Asaro’s work has evolved through an increasingly intense dialogue between personal experience and broader social themes, resulting in paintings conceived to resonate on both an individual and a universal level.
His works have been presented in galleries, international exhibitions, biennials, and art fairs in cities including London, Paris, Florence, Venice, and Milan, and have been featured in British Vogue, Vanity Fair, and numerous international magazines and platforms dedicated to art and culture. His paintings are also held in private collections in several countries.
In 2024, Asaro was selected as a finalist for both the ArtGemini Prize and the Zari Art Prize, two international awards recognising contemporary artistic talent, with the work 'Ready-Made Thoughts'.
In 2025, he received First Prize at the Giotto International Visual Arts Award for the painting 'Silent War', recognised for its conceptual depth and expressive intensity.
In the same year, he was again selected as a finalist for the Zari Art Prize with the works 'Regrets' and 'Reflections of Ourselves'.
His international exhibition activity expanded with participation in the XV Florence Biennale – International Exhibition of Contemporary Art and Design and the London Art Biennale 2025, bringing his work to two major European centres of contemporary art.
He was also selected for the exhibition Fables at London's Mall Galleries and participated in the Sanremo Biennale Art Expo, hosted at the Teatro Ariston, where he received an Honourable Mention from the Critics for the poetic and expressive qualities of his artistic research.
In 2026, Asaro participated in the Milan Biennale ArtExpo, receiving the Biennale Milano Award for artistic excellence and creativity. He also took part in The Other Art Fair London, organized by Saatchi Art, and was selected for the exhibition 'ROAR at London's Mall Galleries.
During the same year, he was selected to participate in the Salon d'Automne in Paris, one of France's historic and internationally recognised exhibitions of contemporary art. He was also included in the Atlante dell'Arte Contemporanea, a reference publication presented at at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
Asaro further participated in the 61st BIENNALE DI VENEZIA through a critical presentation of 'Glimmers of Light' and his artistic practice at the Grenada Pavilion, curated by art critic Daniele Radini Tedeschi, where the work was also temporary exhibited. The presentation explored the conceptual foundations of his practice and its continuing development.
